Finding a good Dental Product

Apr 29 • 1 minute read

Dental Disease is one of the most diagnosed diseases in Veterinary Medicine.  Untreated dental disease not only affects the mouth, but also the overall health of the pet.  There are many products out on the market today to help with dental disease.  Of course, if your pet has severe dental disease, a dental cleaning will be recommended before starting any dental products.

Here is a list of a few of our favorites:

1. Pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes.  There are variety of different flavors of toothpaste like Chicken, Seafood, and Malt.  The malt flavor toothpaste is geared toward food allergy pets.  Brushing your pet’s teeth daily is the best way to keep your pets mouth heathy.

2. Oxyfresh- which is a liquid water additive.  You add this to all the water bowls in the house daily. It’s an easy way to help fight plaque and tartar that is odorless and tasteless, so your pet won’t even know it’s there.

3. Feline Greenies- which are dental treats with a unique shape and crunchy texture that helps clean your cat's teeth by wiping away tartar buildup.

4. Clenz-a-dent Breakables Chews are enzyme-coated rawhide dental chews for dogs that break apart as your dog chews.  The are recommended to help keep teeth clean and freshen breath.

5. C.E.T. Veggie Dent Chews are tartar control chews for dogs that have a texture and shape designed to help reduce plaque and tartar formation.

6. T/D food- which is a nutritionally balanced prescription dental diet for dogs and cats designed to reduce plaque and tartar as they eat.

Please keep in mind not all the dental products out on the market are created equal.  Some may not work for your pet and some might not be appropriate for your pet.  The VOHC, Veterinary Oral Health Council, is a great place to start.  VOHC has a VOHC Registered Seal for products approved to help retard plaque and tartar on the teeth of animals.  Please make sure to do your research and talk with your Veterinarian before starting a dental product with your pet.
