How to: Care for your pet Lizard or Gecko
Take any newly
acquired pet to an exotic animal veterinarian for a wellness examination and
fecal check for parasites.
Quarantine your new
pet in a separate area of the house for at least 30 days.
When housing geckos
together have only one adult male per group to avoid
fighting.
Ensure a gradient
temperature in the enclosure of 70°F on the cool end to 84-88°F on the warm end.
Mist the hind box
substrate daily to promote normal skin shedding.
Provide heat with a
heating pad, heating tape or basking light.
Housing should be
easy to clean with good ventilation and a screen top.
Provide clean fresh
water in a shallow container daily.
Supply a small bowl
of powdered calcium supplement.
Use substrates such
as paper towel, newspaper, or orchid bark. (Avoid corncob, coarse sand or walnut
shell)
Provide a moist hide
box willed with sphagnum moss, cypress mulch or vermiculite.
Include a rough stone
or bark to rub against during shedding season.
Do not allow your pet
to roam free in the house.
Avoid picking your
pet up by the tail.
Avoid hot rocks or
direct contact with heating elements or light sources.
Avoid other animals
such as cats, dog or predatory animals.
Be careful not to
over supplement with vitamins or minerals. Consult your veterinarian
before giving your animal any supplements.
Avoid feeding your
pet insects from the yard that may be contaminated with pesticides.
Be careful not to
over feed your pet. Do not feed the animal more that he can consume in 15
minutes which is usually 4-6 food items.
